Diving in a current can be one of the most exhilarating underwater experiences—like soaring effortlessly across a vibrant reef, carried by the flow of the ocean. But without the right training, it can also feel disorienting or exhausting. That’s where the Drift Diver Specialty (PADI) or Waves, Tides, and Currents Specialty (SSI) comes in.
In this course, you’ll learn how to plan and execute safe, enjoyable dives in moving water, with tips and techniques taught by an experienced instructor. You’ll practice buoyancy control, navigation, and the use of surface signaling equipment, as well as develop efficient buddy communication to stay connected and aware throughout the dive.
From understanding how tides and currents behave to learning how to enter and exit safely in different conditions, this course gives you the tools to feel confident and in control. You’ll also explore how to avoid accidental contact with the reef, how to read the water before and during your dive, and how to conserve energy while still enjoying the ride.
Some of the most breathtaking dive sites in the world—like towering walls, open ocean pinnacles, and channel dives—are current-prone, and this course ensures you’re prepared to dive them safely, comfortably, and with joy.
